The Journey from Athens to Turin:
A group of LETR Final Leg members had the opportunity to attended the Flame Lighting Ceremony at Zappeoin Hall and witnessed the ceremonial lighting of the Special Olympics Flame of Hope™. Together with law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes from Greece, we carried the Flame through Athens stopping at the Hellenic Parliament Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Syntagma Square, Arch of Hadrian, and Panathenean Stadium before finishing at the Embassy of Italy.
I stood beside three of our LETR Final Leg Special Olympics Athletes, Chris, Wyatt, and Jacob, during the Flame Lighting Ceremony. They had the incredible opportunity to meet athletes from Greece and Italy. Observing our athletes during this unique moment was truly inspiring, as their excitement and pride were palpable. Being part of such a meaningful and impactful experience left me in awe of their determination and spirit.
Later that day, the team continued our journey, traveling with the Flame of Hope to Rome. The excitement was palpable as people in the airport and on the plane stopped to ask questions. It was a great opportunity for us to share about LETR and Special Olympics’ mission.
Upon our arrival in Rome, we were met with an extraordinary reception. Special Olympics athletes from Italy, waving flags with passion, lined the entrance. The Italian Minister of Interior was present to greet us, alongside a multitude of supporters who cheered enthusiastically. Adding to the festive atmosphere was Molly, the mascot of the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025, who brought smiles to everyone’s faces.
The ceremony at the airport was both moving and energizing, a powerful testament to the unity and spirit of the Special Olympics community. The athletes’ excitement and pride were contagious, making this moment an unforgettable highlight of our journey.
The next morning, our group met at the Vatican. Due to the Pope’s health issues, the Flame of Hope was blessed by Monsignor Oreste Pepe instead. This was a very moving moment. It marked the beginning of many wonderful experiences I expect from this Final Leg and World Games.
