Excitement filled the air as we embarked on the first day of the 2025 Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg. Our journey began in the picturesque towns of Bardonecchia and Pragelato, where a winter wonderland of falling snow and temperatures in the low 30s greeted us. The community’s enthusiasm was palpable as they cheered us on, ringing cowbells in celebration as we ran past.
Our dedicated athletes tackled the challenging course with unwavering determination, carrying the torch with pride. In Bardonecchia, we were welcomed warmly by the locals and had the pleasure of sampling traditional Italian Crostoli, a delightful crispy fried pastry. The ceremony featured inspiring speeches from our Final Leg team member Otto Juliano and Special Olympics Italian Athlete and Final Leg Runner, Andrea Spezzano.
As we continued our trek to Pragelato, the weather conditions became more formidable, with increasing snow and wind. Despite the challenges, our mission to raise awareness for Special Olympics and the upcoming events remained steadfast. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a large gathering of Special Olympics Italy athletes and supporters, their cheers and smiles lifting our spirits.
In Pragelato, Special Olympics Athlete Shelby Peterson from New Mexico delivered a heartfelt and motivational speech. Both Shelby and Andrea exemplified the boundless potential of our athletes, proving that with determination and support, they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Their stories filled us with immense pride and anticipation for the days ahead.
As Guardians of the Flame, carrying the torch is a poignant reminder of our commitment to Special Olympics and the incredible athletes we support. Witnessing their joy and triumphs along the way has been truly heartwarming, and we look forward to the adventures and inspiration that the remainder of the Final Leg will undoubtedly bring.
Stay tuned for more updates from our journey as we continue to spread the message of inclusion and empowerment!
